The Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) is an advanced wastewater treatment facility that serves eastern Loudoun County. It opened in 2008. It is located next to our Operations and Maintenance Facility and our new Administrative Services Facility. The new administration building replaced our Leesburg location. (Please note that we are no longer in Leesburg after April 1, 2008.)
The Loudoun Water campus will be surrounded by 128 acres of forested buffer, including 19 acres of wetland. The WRF will supplement the treatment currently being provided to us by the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority at their Blue Plains facility.
Loudoun Water has been planning for the Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility since 1975 and completed a Preliminary Design Study in 2000, which recommended the piloting of a membrane bioreactor process to meet stringent effluent limits. A pilot study was completed in 2001 on the property of the Town of Leesburg's Water Pollution Control Facility, thanks to their outstanding cooperation. The pilot confirmed that membrane bioreactor technology will achieve our desired effluent quality.
The cleaned water will be returned to Broad Run, which joins the Potomac River 4.5 miles downstream. Construction began in July 2004 and was completed in early 2008. Loudoun Water has made significant investments in architecture, state-of-the-art odor control, and landscaping along Loudoun County Parkway in order to be a positive addition to the local community. Loudoun Water worked with a Citizen's Advisory Group to develop an outdoor interpretive area and indoor exhibit area.
