Loudoun Water Opens Aquiary to the Public October 18

Celebrate Family Stream Day at Loudoun Water the Same Day

Date: October  06, 2008

Ashburn – On Saturday, October 18, Loudoun County residents will have a new place to visit with the kids: The Aquiary at Loudoun Water. The Aquiary is like a water museum, full of interactive exhibits and interpretive trails that tell the story of drinking water treatment and delivery; source water protection; water conservation and water reclamation. There’s no other destination like it in Loudoun or Northern Virginia. The Aquiary is located at Loudoun Water’s Administration building, at 44865 Loudoun Water Way in Ashburn. The Grand Opening celebration, which is open to the public, is from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, October 18. It begins with a short ceremony with featured speaker, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Edgar B. Hatrick. Following the ceremony, families can explore the Aquiary on their own, and also join the fun at Loudoun’s 7th Annual Family Stream Day, an event also happening at the Loudoun Water campus that day.

The Aquiary was named by one of the citizen members of an advisory group that advised Loudoun Water on the content and appearance of the space. It is a made-up word that rhymes with aviary, and means “a place for Loudoun water learning and appreciation.” Brainstorming for the space and the trail system began in 2003 when Loudoun Water first decided to build a campus in Ashburn, next to its Operations and Maintenance facility. Loudoun Water worked with consultants and a citizen advisory group, comprising a diverse array of Loudoun Water customer volunteers, to develop the exhibits and the space.

Loudoun Water has intended the Aquiary to serve as a learning and teaching tool for Loudoun County Public Schools, and consulted with teachers and the school administration to ensure its effectiveness as a field trip destination. After the Grand Opening on October 18, the Aquiary will be open during regular Loudoun Water business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm, and occasional Saturdays.
