Results of Loudoun Water GUDI Investigation for Selma Estates Well 9F

Date: December  20, 2011

Dear Resident,

Loudoun Water would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some important information regarding your water system.

Following the storms of April 28, 2011, Loudoun Water sampled the water from Selma Estates’ untreated water wells and found two positive test results at the lowest detectable level for E. Coli in Well 9F.  (No E. Coli was found in Well 1B.)  As a result of the findings, Loudoun Water developed a testing protocol with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to determine if Well 9F is groundwater under the direct influence of surface water (GUDI).

The protocol required 20 rounds of samples plus four additional tests be taken over a set period of time to make a determination.  As a result of an evaluation of the test results, combined with a review of the raw water’s physical parameters (turbidity, temperature, pH and conductivity) which shows a lack of fluctuation with respect to climatic events such as rainfall and runoff, VDH has determined that Well 9F is a groundwater source and is NOT under the direct influence of surface water.

As a result of this finding, no further action is required by Loudoun Water with respect to the filtration requirements of the EPA’s Surface Water Treatment Rule or the Waterworks Regulations.  Loudoun Water will continue its current testing protocols for Selma’s wells, which sample the water at four times the rate required by VDH.

In closing, Loudoun Water would like to add that we have, in accordance with VDH regulations, strict protocols in place which assure that all drinking water we supply to our customers meets all EPA and VDH regulations.  The treated drinking water delivered to Selma Estates homes has always met, and continues to meet, EPA and VDH regulations.  Residents do not need to take any action at this time.

VDH’s letter stating its findings is attached and can be found on Loudoun Water’s webpage for Selma Estates at http://www.loudounwater.org/Residential-Customers/Community-Systems/Selma/

Sincerely,

Mike
