One of Loudoun Water's projects was repainting the Broadlands Elevated Water Storage Tank Number 1. This project involved the blasting and repainting of the interior and exterior of a 2.5 million gallon water tank. The tank is located on the east side of Belmont Ridge Road (Route 659), south of the Greenway (Route 267). Painting began in mid-March and finished in late June. The tank was then disinfected, refilled and placed back into service July 8, 2007.
During the blasting and repainting, a containment system was in place to capture blasting material and prevent paint overspray. While this kind of containment system is often used for lead paint removal, the existing and new paint on the tank is a non-lead paint. The containment system was set up specifically to prevent potential dust and/or paint drips from affecting area property owners.
The experience gained from painting Tank Number 1 will be rolled into the repainting of Tank Number 2 next year.
