We are seeking a Community Systems Plant Operator Apprentice who will assist with operating and maintaining water, wastewater, and on-site treatment facilities along with their associated distribution and collection systems. Essential functions include:

  • Reading, interpreting, and executing all facility and department requirements, including adhering to all Operations and Maintenance Manuals, regulatory permits, and Loudoun Water Standing Operating Procedures.
  • Conducts basic inspection procedures, general housekeeping, and preventive maintenance on the facility’s equipment, building, and grounds. An ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures, this includes making general repairs and adjustments as needed on pumps, motors. Some skill in the use and care of hand tools and power tools is a plus. Changes oil and fluids and greases pumps and motors; cleans equipment; makes minor electrical and/or plumbing repairs as needed; reports any problems or need for complex equipment repair. 
  • Operating valves, pumps, gates, and other controls and equipment within the associated with the treatment process. This includes exercising associated distribution system valves. 
  • Reads meters, gauges, and dials; records readings, chemical levels, water properties and statistical data; prepares and maintains a variety of operational logs and records including computer spreadsheets and facility databases.
  • Collects samples; performs bench testing or submits samples to laboratory for testing; maintains records of findings and sample characteristics; calibrates test equipment; cleans and maintains laboratory equipment. 
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Requirements: High School graduate (or equivalent). Strong math skills or an interest in science, biology or chemistry is a plus.  Experience in the operation and maintenance of water, wastewater, and/or water reclamation facilities is preferred but not required. 

Special Requirements:

The ability to obtain at least one of the following licenses within two years; Virginia State Class 4 or above Wastewater Works Operator License, Virginia Class 4 or above Waterworks Operator License, and Virginia Alternative Onsite Sewage System Operator License.  Possession of a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.  Possession of or ability to obtain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within six (6) months of employment.  This position works an on-call schedule and overtime as required to carry out job responsibilities and duties.  This position is deemed Essential per the LW staffing policy and requires working during inclement weather or other emergencies.
