Data Centers and Impacts of Water Supply Related Information Our Facilities2025-2029 Strategic PlanSubmit a Request for Public Records (FOIA) What are Data Center Impacts on Loudoun Water's and the Region's Water Supply?As part of the 2025 Washington Metropolitan Area (WMA) Water Supply and Demand Study, the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) evaluated current and projected direct, on-site consumptive water use by data centers in the Potomac River basin. The study highlighted potential challenges to water supply capacity in the future and provided recommendations. What does this mean for Loudoun County? Loudoun Water has a long history of proactively planning and developing a resilient water supply, treatment and delivery system. As Loudoun County has experienced record growth since the 1990’s, Loudoun Water’s key task has been staying ahead of growth and being ready to serve development that is planned for and approved by Loudoun County. Historically, Loudoun Water has been a wholesale customer both for water supply (Fairfax Water) and sewer service (DC Water/Blue Plains). Loudoun Water leadership recognized many years ago that continued growth would require additional sources and infrastructure, to supplement the wholesale agreements. Proactive planning for and implementing new facilities at the scale required to serve all our customers is a complex financial and technical process. The vision to create a resilient system provides Loudoun Water with existing and planning capacity that is a model for resiliency and flexibility to support County growth.Resources for resiliency, specifically our water reuse system and our quarry storage program, have helped Loudoun Water proactively stay ahead of demand growth driven by both housing and data center development. We continue to update our utility master plans and adjust our water supply plans through flexible, adaptive planning to maintain high level of service to all customers.
