Turning Off Your Home’s Water Supply

The best time to know about your home’s water supply is before an emergency happens. Make sure everyone in your family knows where your emergency shut-off valve is located and how to completely shut it off.

Shut-off valves are typically located:

  • In the crawl space or basement, where the water line enters the home.
  • In the garage where the water line enters the wall or ceiling, near the water heater or laundry hookup.
  • Outside near the foundation, typically protected by a concrete ring or clay pipe.
  • Shutting off water in an emergency can minimize the potential of water damage, particularly when the weather gets colder and pipes are at a greater risk for freezing.
